What is TPO?

TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is a photoinitiator commonly used in professional nail products to help gels cure quickly and evenly under UV or LED lamps. It has been part of the industry for years, helping nail techs achieve beautiful, durable results.

When used professionally and correctly, TPO is safe. However, the new EU regulation focuses on the potential risks of direct, prolonged skin exposure to certain ingredients, especially in DIY or unregulated environments where incorrect curing or direct contact with the skin can result in allergies.

 

What’s Changing and When?

From September 1, 2025, the European Union will ban the manufacture and sale of cosmetic products that contain TPO. This is part of the EU’s ongoing updates to ensure the safest possible standards in cosmetic chemistry.
